Don't let age hold you back

Think you're too old for this? Think again!

“I’m getting too old for that” says everyone at some point in their life. It might be going out to a bar on a Saturday night, it might be jumping in the ball pit at a children’s party, whatever the situation it’s at least crossed our minds.

Let’s be totally honest, getting older sucks! You can’t do all of the stuff you used to be able to, parts of you you didn’t even know you had start to ache and let’s not even get started on the wrinkles. With so many things changing, it can be easy to feel like “I’m getting too old for that” is just something you have to resign yourself to.

What if I was to let you in on a little secret? What if I was to tell you you’re not too old? What if I told you acting your age meant getting out and trying something new! Would you believe me? Maybe, maybe not, but the truth is you don’t have to. There’s hundreds of examples of people out there who didn’t let their age hold them back.

In your 30’s? Take a look at J.K Rowling! She went from teaching English in Portugal, to living on benefits through to one of the bestselling authors of today! She started to change her life on the back of a napkin on a delayed train and has since never looked back. But that’s still quite young...

Maybe you’re in your 40’s? Maybe take a look at Henry Royce. With only one year of schooling to his name and selling news papers to make a living, he went on through various different ventures eventually founding Rolls Royce! But maybe you’re still thinking that’s still a little young?

Ok what about your 50’s? Look no further than Arianna Huffington. After spending years as a journalist, writing about various different subjects, at the age of 55 she co-founded the Huffington post. This has gone on to be one of the biggest and recognisable online publications! Still not convinced?

Sitting there in your 60’s? What about Col. Sanders? After a number of different jobs including an insurance salesman and steam engine stoker, he went on to found KFC at 62. he went on to take his secret recipe to a worldwide market! He’s now one of the most recognised faces in the fast food industry.  Not bad for someone who’s older than most who say “I’m getting to old for this”.

While most of these people set of to do it for themselves, starting their own companies, it all started with a risk. They took a risk to change things when many other are set in their ways. It’s that willingness to get out there and make things happen for yourself that’s key!

It’s not just age that holds people back, it the commitments and obstacles that come with it. It might be that you have children, it might be that you’ve developed a condition with your age that means you can only work a short week and it’s because of these reasons you feel held back in progressing a career your passionate about. It can be any number of things you feel like are holding you back, but it doesn’t have to be that way anymore!

With job sharing and flexible working in all its forms, work places are becoming more and more accommodating to people of all ages and backgrounds! So don’t ever think “I’m too old for this” there’s always a way. If you’re interested in job sharing and how it might help you, get in touch, We’d love to help you.
