French Ban Out Of Work Hours Emails

FRANCE BANS EMAILS AFTER 6PM TO HELP IMPROVE WORK LIFE BALANCE

How many of us can identify with this scenario: Exhausted, you finally sit down at 9.30pm to eat dinner after a day’s work, school pick up, tea, homework, kids to bed, house semi tidy, when PING, an email lands in your inbox and you automatically look at your mobile to read it. It’s from the boss and so you (obviously) have to respond and then bang, you’re right back to thinking - and stressing - about work.

With the rise of digital devices, it can often feel like there is no such thing as properly switching off and that becuase its now possible to be on call all the time, we should be.

Well if you live in France, it’s a different story for while many of us have just accepted this as a new way of life, the French have decided to act and has brought in rules to stop employees’ evenings being interrupted to improve and protect the nation's work-life balance.

The rules, which apply to employees working in the digital and consultancy sectors, mean they will have to switch off work phones and avoid looking at work emails after 6pm through to 9am.

The thought is that this could work wonders for staff motivation and productivity by enabling them to have a total break outside of working hours.

What do you make of that? Ahead of it's time or something that will never catch on this side of the Channel? Tell us on twitter @shareyourjob
