Job Sharing is simply where one full time role is divided between two individuals. How the job is divided (in terms of the hours and the responsibilities) is really dependent on what works for the individuals and the employer. You can find out more about real job shares and how they worked for the relevant parties by reading our blog interviews.

There are multiple options for those who have outside work commitments - flexible hours, working from home, part time work etc. However, if you want a role that fully utilises, and rewards you, for your skills and experience, then job sharing may well be your best option. In theory any job can be shared, and this is now being demonstrated at very senior levels. With a partner holding the fort at work, your free time will really be your own. Once you have established yourselves as a successful partnership, you can plan your ongoing career progression and apply for future roles together. And there is growing evidence that employers benefit greatly from the different skills and strengths that two individuals can bring.

ShareYourJob.com is very simple to use.The first stage is to create a profile of the job you would like to share. This could be your existing job or just the type of job you would like to share. Potential matches will be displayed according to percentage compatibility.

Personal information, such as full name and contact details, will not be shown but if a particular listing is of interest you can communicate via our internal messaging system.

Match results may include:

Individuals who are looking for a similar job and a partner. You could consider applying or a new job together.
Individuals who are looking for a suitable partner to share their existing job.
Jobs posted by employers which are available to job share applicants.

If you want to amend or widen your search results, you can easily adjust your profile, or create multiple profiles. Any profiles you post will be retained on the system and be available for other users (individuals and employers) to see. Profiles will show the date they were created and also the date the user was last active on the site. You can hide profiles at any point in time.

If someone already has a job and is looking for a partner like you - great. If not, we encourage you to consider looking for a suitable partner and then applying for a new role together. There is encouraging evidence that employers are becoming more creative in their hiring strategies and are willing to accommodate different working arrangements to attract talent.

Alix Ainsley and Charlotte Cherry previously shared an HR role at GE Capital UK. There were then hired as a job-share into the role of HR Director at Lloyds Banking Group. There is a growing trend towards ‘career job-sharing’ – people who partner up and plan their future careers together, moving from job to job, promotion to promotion - at least for those critical points in time when they need more flexibility. You can read some interviews here.

So consider finding a compatible partner and applying together for jobs. You can make a compelling case for bringing benefits to the employer – a more complete skill-set through complementary strengths, and much, much higher levels of energy and motivation.

Remember, less than 10% of jobs paid £20,000 or more (full-time equivalent) are advertised with part-time or flexible options. So don't limit yourself to these, you can take on any full time role with the right partner.

Employers can post roles that are open to job share applications, these roles will be automatically matched with any suitable individuals who have registered with us. Please go to the Employers section for more information.
