How do employees benefit from job sharing

As an employee what benefits are offered to you by job sharing?

As we’ve covered before, employers can really benefit from allowing their employees to job share. It’s a great way to keep a productive and high spirited team. But as an employee, what can job sharing offer you? When does it make sense for you to share your position with someone else? And what benefits do you get from the venture?

When to share

Making the switch from full-time to part-time can be a big decision, and for you workaholics it’s not one that’ll come easily. However, when life outside of work throws you a curve-ball, it can become a decision that’s made for you. This might come in the form of single parenthood, having a dependant family member or perhaps a health issue of your own. It might be none of those and you just need some more time for yourself to go out and enjoy life, it’s as valid a reason as any. Whatever the reason, you need to reduce your hours.

The problem here is that the reduction in hours can often mean putting a career on pause or a step down from a more senior position. This is where job sharing can come in!

How a job share can benefit you

There are multiple benefits to be reaped from a job share as opposed to the alternatives...

Sharing your job will allow you to make reductions in your hours without sacrificing your seniority. Splitting one job role between two people will ensure that the amount of hours required for the job are still fulfilled while providing the individuals involved with more time outside of the work place. The extra time spent away from the office (or wherever it is you work) and on your other commitments will help towards alleviating stress, boosting work morale and allowing you to be a more productive team member.

Sharing your job with another individual will help grow your own skill set and experience. Any skills your job share partner has will normally complement the skills you have, providing you the opportunity to learn from someone on your own level while also helping them in turn. The skills that your partner will help you develop may not only prove useful in your current position but my come into play in any future career propositions.

Last, but certainly not least, job share makes the work place work for you.  Some of the issues we have to deal with outside of work are already hard enough, without us worrying where and when we’re going to deal with them. Job sharing is the best way to strike a balance between your work life and your personal life.

What job sharing essentially boils down to is quality of life. It provides you the opportunity to fit more into your week, even if that means you just need some “you” time. It’s your career, and you should have a say in how it plays out.
