Share and Share Alike Says Retiring Rabbi

Job sharing is not just for your typical office job – it even stretches to careers in religion, as we noticed this week in The Jewish Chronicle.

The South London Reform congregation in Wimbledon, London was one of the first synagogues to introduce a job-sharing arrangement, engaging two female Rabbis, Sybil Sheridan and Sylvia Rothschild who have held the reins for 11 years.

The two rabbis attended on different days during the week and alternated over Shabbat.

With the arrangement now coming to an end as Rabbi Sheridan retires and Rabbi Rothschild moving on they have been reflecting on what has been a highly successful example of flexible working in action.

“I didn’t want to be a full-time rabbi and Wimbledon wanted someone full-time,” Rabbi Rothschild remembers.

“It takes a lot of thoughtfulness and communication between the job-sharing partners,” she said. “But it was brilliant working together with another rabbi, especially as one as talented as Sybil.”

Finding the right partner is crucial to making a job share work which is why we are so passionate about building the biggest free job share database in the UK.
